Day 140: Eastern Phoebe

The Eastern Phoebe is a small flycatcher that breeds in eastern North America. During the winter, it can be found in the southernmost U.S. and Central America.

Babies!

The Eastern Phoebe is a cute little bird with a big head, especially when it puffs up its crest. It calls out its own name, with a sharp 'fee-beee' song. We usually identify it by this characteristic call, before spotting it. Its lack of an eye ring and wingbars, and its dark bill distinguish it from other North American flycatchers (such as the Acadian Flycatcher).
