Day 135: Green Heron

The Green Heron is a small heron that can be found in North and Central America. It's a shy and elusive bird, but we see them pretty often during our excursions to areas with water around the state. It also has a very assertive squawking call.

Adults have a glossy, greenish-black cap, a greenish back and wings, a chestnut neck with a white line down the front, grey underparts and short yellow legs. The bill is dark with a long, sharp point. Green Herons feed day or night, standing patiently in shallow water waiting for fish, slowly stalking them or diving on them from above. They are among the few tool-using birds, fabricating various baits that entice fish to where they can grab them.
