Day 39: Brown Creeper

Brown Creepers are little brown song birds that can sometimes be hard to notice because they blend in so well with their surroundings. The Brown Creeper can be found throughout much of the U.S., depending on the time of the year. In Maryland, they are more common during the winter.

The interesting thing about the Brown Creeper is its feeding behavior. As the name suggests, a bird will creep slowly along tree trunks and branches, sometimes spiraling upwards until it reaches the top, then flying down to the bottom of another tree. A Brown Creeper will probe furrows in the bark for insects with its slender, curved beak. It's fascinating to watch one do this over and over again.

Adult Brown Creepers are brown on top with light spotting, resembling a piece of tree bark, with a white chest and belly.
