The Eastern Towhee was one of the first birds that Jared taught me to identify when we started dating. We were walking in a park when we heard a bird call, and Jared encouraged me to find it. In the bushes I came across a large sparrow-looking bird, with very distinct red sides, a white belly, and a black head and back. The bird, cleverly enough, has a call that sounds just like its English name - towhee. After that first birding lesson, I've always remembered and enjoyed seeing the Eastern Towhee.
Usually, you do hear the Eastern Towhee call before you actually see it, as they seem to be pretty chatty. We heard and saw a pretty male bird this past weekend. The females look very similar, but with a brown head and body, instead of black. Evident by its name, the Eastern Towhee is also commonly found in the eastern U.S.
