The Killdeer is one of the most wide-spread and familiar of North American plovers. They are migratory in northern areas and winter as far south as northern South America.
Adults have a brown back and wings, a white belly, and a white breast with two black bands. Although technically shorebirds, Killdeer are often found away from
shores, frequenting
construction sites, road shoulders, gravel roads and driveways, graveled
rooftops, lawns, pastures, and golf courses.
