American Avocets are large wading birds that have long, thin legs and a bill that is upturned at the end. They forage for crustaceans and insects in shallow water or on mud flats. We saw one wading in a lake on our first day in Colorado, when we were exploring the northeast prairie region.
American Avocets breed in the mid-west and on the Pacific coast of North America. They are migratory and mostly winter on the southern Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Mexico and the U.S.
